Portabella Mushroom Steaks

These big mushrooms have a meaty mouth feel to them and are very satisfying, yet light.
Serving Suggestions:
— Place on whole-grain burger buns and add your favorite condiments for a great burger, or on the plate for a great steak!
— Serve with mashed potatoes, frozen vegetables and a hearty salad.

These big mushrooms have a meaty mouth feel to them and are very satisfying, yet light.

Ingredients: 

  • A few cloves of garlic, minced (optional)
  • Choose From:

    • Pepper and seasonings of choice (Italian herb mix is nice)
    • Broth or water
    • Balsamic or malt vinegar
    • Soy sauce
  • Portabella mushroom caps – those big ones; one for each person

Instructions: 

Cover the bottom of a frying pan with any, or a mix, of the liquid above, along with a few dashes of spice. Heat to just medium. Place mushrooms in the pan and cook for about 8 minutes on medium heat.  It depends on how thick the mushrooms are.  You may need to lower heat, and add more liquid – splash with vinegar or .  Keep a touch of liquid in the bottom of the pan as the mushrooms cook, and allow them to brown but not blacken.  Flip the mushrooms and cook for approximately another 5 minutes, using the same guidelines.
